THE PEOPLE VS MEMORANDUM (ATHENS, GREECE) 12 February 2012
As members of Greek parliament debate over the bailout deal (to avoid defaulting on national debt and keeping the eurozone intact), outside the national assembly building thousands of gathered civilians protest against the savage austerity measures this deal demands and face off against an estimated 6,000 riot police in Syntagma square, Athens.
On that day, despite some of the worst rioting and political violence witnessed in recent Greek history, leaving scores of protesters injured, Greek parliament enacted billions of euros in spending cuts and fresh austerity measures.
